Burghound Outstanding ♥ – “This is sufficiently reduced to blur the nuance of the nose though the underlying red berry fruit is clearly ripe. There is both good volume and verve to the delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing and rounded mouthfeel, all wrapped in a nicely complex and sneaky long finish. This is very forward, indeed it could easily be enjoyed now.”
Vinous 93 – “Deep, glistening red. Sexy, assertively perfumed aromas of fresh red fruits, potpourri and baking spices, with a hint of cola in the background. Juicy and focused on the palate, Jay’s 2017 Pinot Noir offers vibrant raspberry, bitter cherry, blood orange and rose pastille flavors and a late jolt of spicy white pepper. Made in a fresh, exuberant style, with silky tannins sneaking in slowly to add shape and grip to the impressively long, spice-accented finish. Aged in 30% new oak.”
Wine Spectator 93 – “A lovely wine, elegantly complex and expressive, with raspberry and rose petal aromas accented by a hint of cardamom. Builds tension toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2029.”
John Gilman 93 – “The 2017 vintage of pinot noir from Nicolas-Jay comes in at 13.5 percent octane and was raised this year in thirty percent new oak. The wine offers up a pure and complex bouquet of red and black cherries, a touch of beetroot, raw cocoa, gamebird, woodsmoke, a touch of mustard seed, a fine base of soil and a deft framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and shows off lovely mid-palate depth of fruit, with a fine base of soil, ripe, buried tannins, tangy acids and fine focus and grip on the long and complex finish. This is an excellent wine in the making!
Decanter 93 – “High-toned and damp, this wine displays aromas of wet earth, Earl Grey tea and cocoa nibs, followed by flavors of pomegranate and red plum skin. It’s classic Oregon Pinot Noir, and one can see the Méo-Camuzet influence, albeit with a softer generosity. The blend is based around Bishop Creek Vineyard, with smaller portions of other sites including Hyland, Knight’s Gambit and Hopewell.”
